VITA is Empowering our Community

Managed locally by United Way of Washtenaw County (UWWC), VITA is a national IRS program providing free tax preparation for individuals and families making $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and those with limited English proficiency.

Trained volunteers and certified tax professionals work one-on-one with eligible taxpayers to:
  • provide basic tax return preparation services and electronic filing; offer financial tips; and inform
  • taxpayers about special tax credits they may qualify for such as Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.
In 2017, UWWC free tax services resulted in:
  • 923 (according to web site)  state and federal returns filed
  • $1.3 M in tax returns brought back to Washtenaw County
  • $120,000 estimated tax return preparation fees saved
  • More than 1000 volunteer hours dedicated to serving Washtenaw County residents
For our VITA program, we have clients like Katherine, who have benefited from our free tax services for many years. "I think it's a wonderful program that's supported by single people and single families who really can't afford to get their taxes done." Ever since Katherine found out about VITA, she decided to take part of the opportunity and get others involved. We appreciate Katherine for being a consistent participant and helping others!
