Donate Baby Items to Benefit Local Mothers

We're expecting! We're expecting to donate hundreds of essential baby items that support at-risk mothers. United Way's Community Baby Shower is an annual event that provides basic supplies and support to give babies a healthy start.
United Way of Washtenaw County (UWWC) is committed to helping move people towards greater financial self-sufficiency and stability. In Washtenaw County, 1 in 3 families struggle to meet the basic needs of their household, sometimes struggling to decide which expenses to prioritize like diapers, food, medication, and education. According to UWWC’s Annual Report, necessities can cost $9000 - $11000 in the first year of a baby’s life. With the support of our community, we are able to assist agencies that provide safety net services for families that are facing crisis situations.
Women United, United Way’s women’s leadership network of over 75,000 globally, sponsors a Community Baby Shower each May. Our month-long drive to collect needed items will support Destiny and Purpose Community Outreach in Ypsilanti (DAPCO). For 21 years, DAPCO has strengthened families in our community by providing assistance and support. “Women United loves partnering with Destiny and Purpose Community Outreach because they are small but mighty, explains Tina Heusel of UWWC. “With only two staff people they support the needs and wants of 60 new and expecting mothers at their Annual Community Baby Shower, in addition to answering on-going needs.” Furthermore, by supporting women head of households in Washtenaw County, a group that makes up the largest percentage of low-income households at 44%, we are providing economic stability, family support, and a good start to newborns in our county.
United Way is asking for your support by donating new (or some gently used) items. It is easy to do:
  1. Throughout the month of May, you can donate baby items by dropping them off at the United Way of Washtenaw County’s office on Platt Road, or at any Old National Bank Branch in Washtenaw County. If you’d prefer, you can order online from DAPCO’s list of needed items and have them shipped directly to United Way.
  2. Your donated items will be collected and organized by Women United, then presented to Destiny and Purpose Community Outreach. DAPCO will then distribute items as needed and during their community event in October.
Supporting these pregnancy and early childhood needs are critical to the continued health and development of children in our community.
