Power of the Purse

If you are a woman looking for a way to make a real difference in the community, there’s a unique way for you to help. It’s the Women’s Leadership Initiative, an organization designed by women – through United Way of Washtenaw County

Research demonstrates that when a family in our community is struggling, whether it’s financially, emotionally, or with health care or safety issues, it’s often the women who bear the brunt of responsibility for holding things together.

The WLI is a way to reach out to women in our community, who bear a disproportionate share of the burden.

  • 27% of women head of households live in poverty. When there are children under the age of 5 in the household, the number increases to 54%
  • Many of these women lack a high diploma and earn only $323 per week.
  • These women juggle financial problems, day care problems, health care problems and education problems – and they do it all alone

These women need a group of community-minded women who focus on their needs and provide them the help and support they must have to build successful lives.

These women need YOU.
